What You Should Do First

Try to stay as calm as possible.

1

Call us immediately at (780) 705-2131

2

Tell us you’re on your way, so our team can prepare.

3

Transport your pet to our hospital safely. If possible, ask someone to come with you.

Is It An Emergency?

Firstly, trust your instincts. If you think your pet is in distress, bring them to us. A false alarm is always better than a fatal missed call.

Get immediate help if you notice any of the following:

- Pale gums or a weak, rapid pulse
- Any major trauma, such as being hit by a car or attacked by another animal
- Possible poisoning or ingestion of a toxic substance
- Difficulty breathing, choking, or constant coughing
- Seizures or loss of consciousness
- Severe bleeding that doesn’t stop, or blood in vomit/diarrhea
- Obvious signs of severe pain or anxiety
- Broken bones or the inability to move or stand
- Signs of heatstroke or a very high/low body temperature
- Severe or repeated vomiting or diarrhea
- A swollen, hard abdomen, especially when combined with unsuccessful
attempts to vomit

Simple First Aid for Emergencies

In a crisis, a few simple actions can help stabilize your pet for or during transport. However, your main goal is always to get to our clinic as fast as you safely can. * These are not a substitute for veterinary care. When you contact us, we’ll give you the needed first aid instructions over the phone.

For Bleeding

Apply firm, steady pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or towel.
If possible, try to keep the injured area elevated above their heart

For Choking

Check their mouth for any visible obstruction. If you can, try to remove it with your fingers.
Be careful. Don’t push it further down. Remember, a panicked pet may bite. Do not put your hands in your pet’s mouth if you think they might bite you.

When Not Breathing

Only if someone else is driving.
If your pet has no pulse and has stopped breathing, you can perform CPR during transport.
Place your pet on their side, hold their mouth closed.
Breathe into their nostrils once every three seconds. After each breath, give three quick chest compressions

Importantly, Don’t Give Your Pet Any Human Medications

Your Pet’s Stability
is Our Priority

When you arrive, our team will perform an immediate triage assessment. This means we evaluate your pet’s condition the moment we see them to determine the level of urgency and begin stabilization procedures right away.
Triage and Stabilization
We’ll immediately assess your pet’s consciousness, airway, breathing, and circulation (checking for pale gums or a weak pulse). Patients needing the most urgent attention are moved to our treatment area for immediate doctor assessment and stabilization. In life-threatening situations, we may ask for your consent to perform CPR. As your pet is stabilized, we’ll review a diagnostic plan with you.
